Icom IC-M34 VHF Waterproof Marine Radio E-mail
Monday, 24 October 2011 06:20
I got a chance to try ICOM's new waterproof M-34 floating marine radio and use it on a trip to Montauk where many of us communicated on the water throughout the day. The first thing I noticed was how clear and crisp the the sound was. The controls where very easy to use, I did have to get use to not having the squelch control on top but the button control was easy to get use to.
There are a bunch of waterproof models on the market but the M-34 floats which I got to see first hand because I was trying to clip it to my PFD and it slipped and went right in the drink - and yes it does float and after a quick radio check my signal was perfect. It also has a flashing red beacon light that is activated once the unit hits the water which I noticed after retrieving it and didn't know how to turn it off, eventually it turned off on its own but the feature has obvious safety implications. The unit is a perfect size and weight for kayak fishing and I think it can be one of those must have safety items that every kayak angler should have. You can set it up so any weather alerts automatically broadcast no matter what channel you are on. The M-34 uses a lithium ion battery that after 2 days on the water I barley made a dent in according to the battery icon.
The Icon M34 waterproof radio is a great investment to your safety on the water and will also keep you in constant communication with your buddies while kayak fishing.
