Guide Report - Steve Utley May 2009 E-mail

Report: The winds have been in the 20 to 30 mph range for quite awhile but you can still find spots out of the wind with relatively clear water. Plan your trip well and check the weather often, leave a trip plan, and wear your PFD.  Fishing trips are always more enjoyable for everyone when you think safety first.

For Light Tackle: Start out early and look to the shorelines for feeding Redfish from Packery Channel Flats to Southbay.  Soft plastics in glass minnow or small mullet patterns are doing well rigged weedless and weightless. We have been using the new Reaction Strike Lures in either the Jerk Jr. or their new Mullet Jr. You can get these baits online http://www.reactionstrike.com/ or at Roy's Bait and Tackle located in Corpus Christi Texas. The top water bite is starting up for both speckled Trout and Redfish in depths of 3' to 4' using  the Revo Shad in Ghost Minnow or bone silver Spook Jr..

On the Fly: Again start early and look to the shorelines for feeding Redfish. Use glass minnow imitations such as Surf Candy in the small 1" size or a light Clouser in white with a little crystal flash. As the day progresses fish the drop offs with Spoon Fly's in gold or silver. Clousers in Chartreuse over White or Dink Poppers of the same color have been doing well for both Speckled Trout and Redfish.

Well the wind blew 35 mph the tide rose 2' by 6:45AM as we paddled onto the flat. The first thing we saw was a redfish pushing a wake right toward us.  We just sat there and waited and watched as he came all the way to the kayaks and then with the swing of his tail swung around and took off. Yep this showed all the signs of a good day.  And a good day it was, the shorelines were scattered with feeding reds . They were looking for glass minnows and they were as shallow as they could get. The reds weren't hard to spot with their backs sticking up out of the water.  The first one I cast a 3" Reaction Strike soft plastic to only hesitated a second before he slammed it and the fight was on. After the fight I put him on the measure stick and wouldn’t you know it, 1/16" oversized. I held onto him for a while in the live well. Then there was another one and continued as this went on most of the morning as I tried to find the right redfish.   As the day progressed the reds fell off the flat and into 3' to 4' of water, so we moved over to the edge and started casting. It only took 3 casts and the lure just started to move off to the side as I set the hook he still kept moving off as if nothing had happened so I leaned into him then he woke up and the fight was on. Run after run that red made until I finally got him landed. I paddled over to the shallows to check his length and weigh him.   He was 26" long and over 6#.  I finally had one to keep. I opened the live well and said goodbye to the first fish wishing he had been a little shorter as he weighed over 8# and off he swam. That oxygen system really keeps those fish spunky in that live well cause as he swam off he gave me a good splash.
Check out the Texas Saltwater Series Kayak Division www.kayakseries.com.  A great day was had by all... So if you ever decide to try a Kayak Tournament on the Texas Coast, check the schedule and come on down . Scott, Jim and the rest of us would be glad to have you.

God Bless and Happy Fishing...
