Report: This year the winter on Oahu has been extremely rough. I cannot remember in all my years in Hawaii a winter this cold. Lately we have been blasted by cold northeast winds. Large open ocean swells continue to rock the north shore where we operate. Island wide has been a wash lately with strong and gusty winds making even leeward sections hard to negotiate. Even though the whales are in close we have not had many days to watch them from kayaks. Fishing has been slow for all island kayak anglers as water access has been limited.

Recently I was able to take a few clients out and squeeze in a day between the storms. The bite was o.k. and we managed to get some fish. We pulled in a barracuda and an aha before heading outside. In the deep we took two ono strikes but no fish came in, only perfectly sliced baits just missing the stinger hook. We did have a couple of very large male hump backs cruise up close on us surfacing only 20 yards away. I also noticed some good predator birds looking in the same area as us letting me know fish are in the area. As we headed back to shore the winds picked up and a new swell started to rise we just got the beach before it got nasty again.

As I write this another round of weather is heading in and the long time forecast looks grim. I really can’t wait for calmer weather and good fishing days. Keep your head up guys and your lines tight. Calmer seas are just around the corner. Aloha Boogie-D
