Guide Report - Capt. Rich Santos April 2009 E-mail

Report: The wintertime fly fishing for Redfish was on and off due to the random changing water temperatures we’ve had but also meant that the Spotted Sea Trout bite was on during the colder days! I had several great guide trips with lots of slot size Trout caught. The Southern Flounder fishing was also better than normal over the winter for me. A little further south of Jacksonville I also hand some pretty good guide trips in February and March catching Bluefish, Ladyfish and Black Drum all on fly. The low tide sight fishing conditions for Redfish is getting better now as we move into April. Those winter time Redfish schools are starting to break up and we’re able see more individuals and smaller groups around the oyster bars and mud flats actively looking for food and feeding. They’re easier to catch during the springtime due to the lack of bait and the hungry state there in! This good bite will last through June and our waters get loaded with Mullet, Shrimp and Crabs. Then you can watch the Roseate Spoonbills come in and feed on the shrimp and see a Redfish’s back pushing along next to him all summer long. The springtime is great time of year to sneak up on one in a kayak and have a Redfish readily eat your fly or lure.

Here’s also what’s new. Be sure to check out my new BLOG Page at www.flyfishjax.com/html/fishing_blog.html. It includes the latest up to date fishing report which is hosted on the Black Fly Flog.

It’s a nationwide blog for all guides, lodges, best flies and more. Go to: http://www.vaughncochranart.com/flog .

Until next time. Tight Loops and Lines to all!
