With forum names like Yak-a-Lou, Kreolekayakr and Yakfever, there is little doubt that this bunch of yakaholics is serious about kayak fishing. Coastal Louisiana and Mississippi provide virtually unlimited kayak fishing opportunities and, as in most other areas of the country, they are experiencing explosive growth in the sport. The BCKFC was originally formed by a few friends with a passion for kayak fishing. They sought to organize kayak fishing events and introduce the sport to others. The group has only been in existence since 2004 and they boast an active membership of 143. Fully organized with an elected governing board, bylaws and a constitution, the BCKFC’s goals are to organize kayak fishermen; promote safe kayaking and fellowship; act as a fun meeting place for kayak fishermen; provide a forum for exchange of ideas; sponsor kayak fishing tournaments; and to provide a public presence to protect the interest of kayak fishermen. While the group strongly promotes each of its formal goals, kayak fishing fun obviously tops their list. Annual fishing events such as “Paddle Palooza,” “Fall N Tide,” “Skunk Fest,” and others, the BCKFC offers kayak anglers of all skill levels a chance to experience kayak fishing at its best, along with a little competitive bonus. The events regularly attract dozens of participants from all over the Gulf Coast. The BCKFC hosts a first-class website that contains rigging tips, event listings, kayak-related links and photos. They also have a very active web forum that provides members a chance to share reports and ideas as well as make new kayak fishing friends. The forum has over 300 registered participants and oftentimes sparks impromptu fishing trips between the members. New this year, the BCKFC has a “Master Angler” program available to club members. By catching certain qualified fish from a kayak, members attain ascending skill level designations of Advanced, Expert, Elite and Master. Members reaching the Master level can then compete for the title of “Ultimate” BCKFC angler by catching additional qualified fish species. Southern hospitality, great fishing and a dedicated group of kayak anglers make the BCKFC one of the premier kayak fishing clubs in the country.
