alaska kayak fishing trip

What a kayak fishing trip! Myself and 6 other kayakers camped on an island about 60 miles south of Ketchikan for 6 days and landed over 60 halibut up to 80 lbs. from our kayaks.

Of course the weather was a factor, but heavy rains didn't stop us from catching fish all day for the first 2 days, and the the rest of the week was misty, sunny and a pleasure to fish in.

We had a guide that had tents set up on the island and also a cook that stayed on the island to take care of all our eatting needs. We released about 90% of our catches and just kept what was needed for the days meals.

We caught as many yellow eye, and all kinds of rock fish that we could want, but stayed away from the yellow eyes as best we could to fish deep and with 6-8 oz. jigs with 10 inch plastic twister tails, looking for the bigger halibut. We kept only the "chicken" halibut for dinner and released everything over 15-20 lbs. or so.

We also had shrimp pots and crab trabs out for a little pre meal starters almost each night. We also caught a few silver salmon that was great on a nice cedar plank open fire.

I have a couple hundred pictures, but will try to post a bunch of the best.

Here is Dave Zig, with help from Bill, landing the biggest halibut of the week.
