Great 12 footer

I spent a week in Costa Rica fishing off the Redfish 12' and it really is a great kayak, that has enough speed. the stability is awesome likes its big brother the 14' but has a bonus of a nice large front hatch. I was able to stand in it and that seat (canvas) is a dream.

Great beginner yak

Redfish...good beginner yak. Very stable. Good maneuverability and handles rough water well. It is also easy to outfit. Overall, I like my Redfish 12, I'm just not in love.

IMO, it is a slow boat. Heritage could do much to improve on the design by narrowing the bow a little bit to allow it to slice through the water instead of plowing. This may also be the reason for the very noticeable wind cocking in winds over, I'd say, 8 knots.

I'd like to see a remodel a little narrower on the beam...maybe 28 inches instead of 30...this would improve tracking and decrease weight (right now too heavy for it's size), but not hurt stability too much.

Until they decide to remodel this yak, a rudder kit is highly recommended if fishing in wind and/or current.
