Nice bass

Drew Gregory, “ BasserDrew” to many, hails from Atlanta , GA , and currently resides in Greenwood , SC. He has been river fishing since he could handle a rod and reel, but for the past six years has been pioneering the sport of kayak fishing in freshwater rivers. Standing up and fishing out of his kayak for shoal, smallmouth and largemouth bass is his passion. He got into the sport of kayak fishing when he was still in college, because it was cheaper and more intriguing than traditional boat and lake fishing. Since then, his knowledge and passion for the sport has magnified. He is slightly addicted to finding new, unexplored water where big bass abound, and will stop at nothing to get to them which sometimes makes for some crazy adventures.

even bigger bass form kayak

Drew has a long history of kayak fishing in rivers for bass. He has logged over 465 river trips in a kayak and is the current champion of the Flint River tournament stop on the GeorgiaKayakFishing.com tournament trail. He has presented river fishing seminars at various fishing expos, churches and upcoming at Bass Pro Shops retail stores. BasserDrew has been recognized in magazines that have featured his “controlled chaos” style of fishing out of a kayak, while standing up in moving water through rapids and obstacles! In a three month period in 2008 he was blessed to catch 60 river bass that weighed over 4lbs, including several in the 6-8lb range. If you need to learn about fishing in rivers for bass, Drew is definitely one of the guys that can help you become the river basser you aspire to be. He has a very helpful website called DrewGregory.com where you can read about all things river bassin’ and even watch videos of river bass action.

Fishing accomplishments you are most proud of?

I have won some tournaments and caught what most would consider a lifetime’s worth of big fish, but there are a lot of guys out there that can claim that stuff.  I’ll know if I am proud of my fishing accomplishments when I am 75 or 80 years old one day and can look back at how I used whatever little notoriety my fishing accomplishments helped me receive.  If I helped no one with it, then the accomplishments did nothing and I will not be proud of any of them.  My goal is to help people learn how to go river bassin’ properly, efficiently and productively, and to help teach young people the positive life lessons that can be learned through the sport.

What do you do when you're not fishing?

I like to snowboard, play disc golf and traditional golf as well as 2v2 beach volleyball.  I also enjoy watching all sports, especially NFL and NCAA football.  I am sort of a fantasy football geek and a big MMA (mixed martial arts) fan as well.  I’ll piddle around on facebook or youtube like anyone else, but lately I’ve been too busy to do much of anything but work on my website.  I also try and visit my family in Atlanta as often as possible because they are an amazing group of people and are fun to be around.  I volunteer as a youth leader at my local church and enjoy spending time with the kids on Wednesday nights, on retreats, or whenever they just want to hang out.  Occasionally I find time to sleep, eat or take a gal out on a date but lately my fishing career is cutting into all of those!

Why kayak fishing?

I am all about catching the biggest bass in whatever river I am fishing.  Simply put, kayaks are far and away the best tool for accomplishing this goal in the rivers I frequent.  They are the most versatile rivercraft there is for my river bassin’ needs since they float in five inches of water and there is almost no river access that a kayak cannot get you into.  They’ll go over rapids in mountain rivers and slither past the cypress trees in lowland swampy creeks where traditional boats cannot go.  It is also an added bonus that kayaking gives you a great physical workout to keep you in shape!
