Installing a Flush Mount Rod Holder E-mail
Saturday, 09 April 2011 06:52
Installing a flush mount rod holder is quick and surprisingly easy provided that you measure twice and cut once. You should have a little wiggle room for "oops" depending on the mounting surface of the particular modol that you are installing. However, making the mistake of rushing into this install will send the whole projuct sideways in a hurry.

Locate the area for the install. Keep in mind that this will be an oblong hole and is fairly large. You also need to consider the angle that you are going to want when finished this install.

I like to use a hole saw to make the initial cut. This removes 2/3 of the eyeballing procedure on the next cut. The closer and more exact that you can make your cuts goes a long way to the streangth and integrity of your hull and may effect your overall performance.

You will need to decide a general direction for your rod to point while in the holder. To do this, I used a broon handle and circled the kayak several times before I found a position that I was happy with. I marked the kayak at the center of where the broom stick was resting. This was my center point for my next cut. I eyeball approximately 3/8 of an inch out from that mark and draw a half circle back to my original circle cut. This flush mount rod hoder allowed me approximately 5/8 of oops room. Be sure to check yours for the same.

Once you have test fitted your flush mount, pre-drill for your rivots or well nuts. As always, adding a gasket, or forming your own with your favorite sealant isn't a bad idea. Simply tighten the rod holder down. You're ready to rock!
