Report: Fishing around the cold fronts that have been moving through more regularly has picked up. Seems the cooler weather and all the rain has triggered the Fall schooling patterns for Redfish and Flounder. The Speckled Trout, the big ones are starting to show up on the shorelines. We did have a very devastating Red Tide algae bloom that killed fish all up and down the Padre Island Sea Shore. The north winds have been helping to keep it pushed further off shore which is a real Blessing. With all the severe fronts moving through make sure you watch the weather before planning your next kayak adventure and wear proper clothing. Always leave a trip plan with someone and a VHF radio is as important to me as my PFD, don't leave the shore without them. Light Tackle: Redfish are up real skinny feeding on small crabs, shrimp and finger mullet. The Redfish are also moving out and around the Jetties as well as in the surf. We have been catching good numbers of slot fish on Reaction Strike paddle tail 4.5" or 3.5" soft plastics in copper, black/gold, and root beer/chartreuse all on a 1/8 oz. weedless jighead. The top water bite is also turning on with Bone/Silver or white /pink or red head for both Trout and Redfish. If it is Flounder you are looking for dredge that soft plastic slow across the bottom, red sea shad has been a great color. Don't forget that through the month of November the Flounder Regs change. You are only allowed 2 per day and they have to be caught on rod and reel. Check with Texas Parks and Wildlife for any questions you might have on the regulations. On the Fly: Fly fishing for Redfish and Flounder has been steadily getting better. We are finding both up skinny and feeding. Crab and Shrimp patterns are working well. Keep the sparkle down when tying these patterns. With the clarity up shallow a little goes along way. Poppers in chartreuse are starting to draw the attention from Speckled Trout. A Rattle Mullet pattern in chartreuse over white is also working well. For Flounder low and slow seems to be the ticket. Root beer clousers / gold flash draws quite a bit of attention. We are having a Fall Fly Event to show off the new Fly Shop at Roy's Bait and Tackle on December 5th from 9am to 5pm ,the Reps from Simms, TFO, Lamson, Scientific Angler, Echo Fly Rods and Air Flo lines will be there to name a few. There will be sales on many different product lines along with seminars, casting demos, fly tying and even a Fly Casting Obstacle Course. There will be an hourly raffle and prizes for the Casting event as well. So if you happen to be in the area drop on in and check it out I'm sure a good time will be had by all. Be safe on and off the water and slide those feet as the stingrays are plentiful as well... God Bless and Happy Fishing... Captain Steven Utley |
