Report: October was the month of the Tarpon, with the seasonal prevailing winds and warm water temperatures from the summer heat the bait-fish were all along the Northern coast of the Island making for good fishing. A 9wt-9ft fly-rod with a  20lb-30lb leader and a 40lb-60lb shock tippet with a chartreuse and white deceiver or other bait sardine pattern gets the job done from the kayak. Finding nervous water is the key to getting a shot at the rolling silver kings. Live bait is always a way to attract attention and get a few good hits, these fish are not the biggest fish around but they put up a good fight and provide plenty of aerial entertainment.  Stained or water with a light brown discoloration at the mouth of (arroyos) inland drainage's from tidal wetland flows provides the perfect environment for the baitfish to feed on the their nutrients of the high low tide flow.  In turn larger predators take advantage of this daily cycle and gorge themselves on the shoals of bait fish.  You can expect to get a chance at our Tarpon, Snook, Jack and other resident populations.

November will be the beginning of the seasonal winds shifting making the South-side of the island Leeward.  The winds like to blow here in the winter so this is the time of year I head for the flats for the arrival of the Christmas bones and the Pelagic friends who will soon be following making there yearly run.  One of the deepest spots in all of the Atlantic trench lay just off the Northern coast and are accessible by kayak and as far as I know no one has really tried to fish these waters this way.  Live ballyhoo or Sardine trolled slowly behind kayak can produce Dorado, Black-fin Tuna, Bonito to name a few.  I will keep you posted to our progress with the Vieques Beyond the Breakers Project...See you next month and happy Kayak-fishing from The Vieques Adventure Company.
