Report: I don't bother writing in the summer unless there is something to write about. The last few week has left us with some pretty rainy days washing the hillsides of Vieques clean. These Arroyos wash debris that is nitrogen rich among other things into the bays around the island. When the sun comes back out it warms the water and the algae begins to bloom and the food chain comes alive. I decided to take a walk along the shore with the dog and before I had walked ten steps....there they were, the Pelicans hammering the water. These are mostly endangered birds so to see up to 29 of them at a time feeding is a real sight. Once in a while I would hear a big splash and looked back like always expecting to see a Pelican, but today it was just white froth in a few feet of water, perfect tanic color with a clear water line running along the drop off and shore where the Tarpon were gorging. We hooked a few and jumped a few more. We even got a couple hungover college kids on these fish with top water fare. The kayakflyfishers even got there fill for a few days averaging 3-4 good hookups and plays with many follows and misses...exciting fishing to say the least and it should only get better through the end of September into early October. This is a really great way to hone your skills in a kayak with large fish that are not so hard to hook but a real challenge to land...If you are coming to Vieques and want additional information, check out our site www.viequesadventures.com. We will be booking Tarpon for next week..it's summer nobody is around. You really have the place to yourself.........Paddle on and happy fishing how ever you do it.
