Report: This month we have seen the return of the pelagics to the 30 and 40 fathom ledges. During the black moon in May there was an explosion of Mahi and ono.
Hawaiian kayak anglers have enjoyed the bounty. Also mixed in with the catches were some big jacks and some big cudas. The tuna bite is getting better and we have seen some small shibis and kawa'kawa. A lot of the fish have spawned and soon the baby juveniles will start to pile on the shore bringing in lots of game to shallower water. I had particularly enjoyed a tour with a guy by the name of Jason from cali this last month. Jason and his father booked a tour for some off shore kayak fishing. The weather was spectacular and we got to fish a normally very dangerous area. This is one of my favorite places to fish and this ledge has been producing. Only a half hour into the trip and I put him on a 25 pound bull mahi. I had rigged a fresh dead opleu onto a medium spinning outfit. What a battle that fish put up. This nice size bull jumped about 6 times and took some mad runs. Jason did a great job battling the fish letting it run and getting it tired before bringing it up to the Yak. After gaffing his mahi and taking some awesome pictures we iced the mahi and prepared to continue trolling. 15 minute later Jason was re baiting after hooking into that monster. I could see his hands shaking and trembling. I said to him "good rush yeah brah". Guaranteed he's hooked for life after that incredible fish. Seeing how pumped up he was made my whole year.
