Report: Aloha KFM crew. Hawaiian summer is going full blast right now. The fishing has been incredible. We are having another good year of bait. The bait is in everywhere and all around the island staked up close in balls right off the beach. This means good fishing. It’s nearing the peak of the post spawn so this next month is going to be incredible as well… With all the mackerel scad , big eye scad, sardines, and anchovies around the big hungry game fish are on the prowl. When we are not kayak fishing we fish the bait balls from the beach and watch as bonita, jacks, cuda and needle fish crash up the bait balls right at our feet. The balls are big and thick thanks to the no netting allowed law. You have to catch bait in Hawaii one at a time with line and pole, and this means bait for everyone not just a few. This is the time of year fishing is easy. Put on some live bait and hold on. So the next month we will anticipate more excellent in shore fishing. Off shore fishing has been just as good with lots of mahi and ono on the ledges. Shibi and bonita are lurking off shore as well as a few tasty kamanu. These fish all love to eat the small jacks and bonita that are feasting inshore. So this is the time of year that some of the biggest off shore fish will be found much closer to land. This is the best time to book a kayak fishing trip in Hawaii. The bite is on. See you on the water. ALOHA

The CKT team has been able to get in some good fishing. The inshore fishing in Hawaii has been awesome. Thick bait balls are pushed up right on the shore and predators are whacking them. Team CKT has been training for the Paddlers Papio Open www.coastalkayaktours.com/tournaments.html This is a jack trevally tournament with the biggest papio (trevally under 10lbs.) being awarded $1000 dollars. The second biggest papio will be worth $500 dollars. There is even a $300 dollar prize for needle fish. There is also a brand new Trident 13 Ocean Kayak being given to the biggest other fish. This contest is sure to be a lot of fun with lots of cash money and prizes.

Team CKT strategy has been to troll live or fresh bait close to shore. This mostly produces trevally in the 5 pound range but every now and then a big boy will show up in the shallows. Just the other day I was almost spooled, then drug into the rocks on a very light duty rod and reel. I was trashed by a very large and stubborn jack in the 20 pound range. Boy those fish can fight. Inshore fishing is at a peak in Hawaii right now. We are enjoying every second of the trevally run.

So far it has been another fun year of competing and catching for Team CKT. With Still lots of time left in the season we are looking forward to fishing as much as we can. The prospect of big game keeps the adrenaline high. The team spirits are up and thanks to DriGrip the risk to skin cancer is at a minimum. Hope everyone else is having a great summer too and catching lots of good fish. ALOHA
