Report: It’s been very hard for Tampa Bay kayak anglers to make it out on a regular basis as the storms have continued to pound the area for several days in a row.
Taking advantage of a short gap in the weather this past Friday, I took clients Matt and Leo on a half day trip in search of some fish. It took us a while to find them but as soon as the tide changed and water started to flush out of the mangrove creeks, the bite turned on. Leo won a friendly competition with his buddy Matt after catching a couple of beautiful, bronzed upper slot reds. Matt couldn’t get the reds to help him out but did a nice job on the speckled trout with a couple of nice sized fish. Taking advantage of an overcast day, we used top water lures all morning long. Nothing beats
the excitement of a strike on the surface of the water. Spook Jr in bone color was=2 0the lure of choice.

Another break in the weather during Memorial Day gave me a chance to hit the beach in search of Tarpon and Kingfish. Live bait was plentiful and we found a few Tarpon rolling. I was only able to hook up a couple of black tip sharks but a friend of mine did put a nice tarpon at the end of his line. Kingfish were not around; probably because the water temperature is rising out of their comfort zone above 75 degrees.

Other local reports speak of snook being abundant on the flats as well as the redfish. Late afternoon, extreme low tides are the best times to fish if you’re lucky enough to avoid the thunderstorms that commonly hit our area late in the day.

Until next time…enjoy your day, kayak fishing!!!
