Sarasota / Southern Tampa Bay  - The big news in the Sarasota and Southern Tampa Bay area is that the Mackerel are back in great numbers - especially the Kings. The fall run down the beaches is an excellent opportunity for kayak anglers to catch a smoker king. The fish move closer to the beaches this time of year and both King and Spanish Mackerel are devastating the bait schools. The best action is early in the morning until about mid-day depending on the weather. If you are lucky you can also tangle with some False Albacore early, usually after first light. Look for birds diving on the surface and heavy action from bait schools getting forced to the surface as tell tale signs of Mackerel and False Albacore.

Cobia are also making a decent showing around area near shore reefs. Most of the Cobia that Sun Coast Kayak Sport Fishing clients have been encountering has come from chumming along the shallow reefs.

snook Inshore the Snook are moving closer to the mouths of area creeks and rivers in which they will wait out the colder winter months. For now though they are feeding heavily along the shallow flats that are just adjacent to the outflows of the rivers, creeks and back areas. The action has been very good lately and is at times almost as good as the phenomenal spring action we saw in the same areas. Once again big Snook in the 15# to 20# class are staging up in big numbers along with many smaller fish. Chumming with live bait is a sure fire way of igniting some fantastic action. If artificials are your game then top water baits and small plastic jigs moved erratically through the shallows at first light has led to some exciting action.

red Redfish are everywhere lately. The flats are full of them and every dock and seawall along the intracoastal waterway seems to be holding them. The Reds have been very co-operative and their sizes have been well within the slot limit plus some over the slot. Sight fishing opportunities on the flats have been good in some areas of Tampa Bay and in northern Sarasota Bay on the falling tides. Tailing schools of Redfish are especially active at first light and top water baits and jigs are an exciting way to get them biting. If they still have lockjaw... nothing beats a small pinfish to ignite a furious strike.

Lastly, the big Sea Trout are starting to move onto the shallow flats as the water temperatures begin to cool. The bigger trout have been hanging in the deeper waters just off the flats during the warmer months but now they are feeding heavily in the shallows.

mayan The Everglades - The action in the Everglades canal systems is really heating up as the water temperatures are beginning to drop. This is the time of year in which catch rates of over 100 fish per angler are the norm and some amazing catches of trophy Largemouth Bass are only a cast away. Right now Sun Coast Kayak Sport Fishing clients are experiencing fantastic catches of Largemouth Bass (one one trip two anglers caught and released over 100 Bass from 1# to 5#), exotic Oscars, Mayan Cichlids, Bowfin, some impressive catches of Crappie and the Peacock Bass are becoming even more common in the more remote areas.

The Florida Keys - Bonefish action is amazing, especially in the northern Keys from Islamorada up to Key Largo. Sun Coast Kayak Sport Fishing clients are seeing some of the best Bonefish action of the year along the Atlantic and Florida Bay flats. The introduction of the new Stand N Fish kayak fishing systems into the Sun Coast Kayak Sport Fishing fleet which allows clients to actually stand comfortably and make precise casts to tailing and cruising Bonefish, as well as Permit, and even Tarpon. Out on the edges of the flats the Permit have also been producing very well with sight fishing using small crabs being the best bet for line burning action. In the canals and along the bridges clients have been experiencing some fantastic late season action for Tarpon up to 100 plus pounds and Snook. In the mangroves the Snapper bite has been very rewarding, especially on the outgoing tides. On the flats the sight fishing opportunities for Sharks and Barracuda is also very good right now.

Peacock Bass and Exotic Fish - The Peacock Bass bite is good in the canals systems of southeastern Florida right now from Ft. peacock Lauderdale down to the south of Miami. While the bite isn't as strong as it has been in recent months the Peacocks are still co-operating well and catches of up to 30 or more Peacock Bass per trip are a possibility. The average size of these catches is between 1# and 5#. Other Exotic Fish are just starting to get really good. In the Ft. Lauderdale area the Snakeheads are blasting top water baits along the weedy edges of the canal systems. Racing top water baits such as a Skitterwalk or a plastic Horny Toad along the weeds is almost a sure bet for an explosive Snakehead bite. Oscars, Mayan Cichlid, Midas Cichlid, and even a Clown Knifefish have been caught by Sun Coast Kayak Sport Fishing clients recently as well.

largemouth2 Freshwater - The Largemouth Bass bite has been increasingly better as the water temperatures continue to fall. Bigger bass have been moving into the shallows to feed more frequently from the cypress lined remote areas of the Ocala National Forest down through Orlando, and along the Gulf Coast to the Everglades. With each trip Sun Coast Kayak Sport Fishing clients have been seeing more and more action using crankbaits, spinner baits, and soft plastics. In just the past two weeks clients have landed 3 Largemouth in the 8-9# range. Thanks to a ton of exploratory trips into some very remote areas last year, Sun Coast Kayak Sport Fishing is able to put freshwater kayak fishing enthusiasts into of the best Largemouth Bass fishing throughout Florida that no one else can access. This means better shots at more trophy fish.
