Report: Biscayne Bay and urban canals

The weather has been testy again for May...no rain for months but high winds and now heavy daily rain up to several inches...the rain is needed but its near a washout at times...during the lower tides the bones have been mudding fairly hard and also several will tail up on various critters but the lack of sun and driving wind has kept that to a few shots a day...redfish are still gaining numbers and the bulls have been scarce for a while but still there are some fairly large redfish tailing and packing up...these reds go to about 25lbs right now but as usual are a tough bite unless the planets align.
When they do it is brutal...lots of snook ranging from small to well over slot under the mangroves during high swollen tides as they fall out...small baitfish work pretty good and skipping the fly under the branches is a must as well as "down and dirty" tactics...also I have seen a few big permit..the numbers are still down but the outright size demands attention...nothing under 30lbs the last couple weeks...bull sharks are stacking up in anticipation of the freshwater canal gates to open up so they can feed hard...these sharks are going up to 500lbs and numbers are getting higher every day and several can be seen at all times in knee to waist deep water...they are very willing to attack the fly but if targeting them be careful and take proper gear such as wire and hook puller preferably with long handle and know where you are so you can beach yourself for landing it safely and releasing it...baby tarpon are out around mangroves where freshwater creeks are flowing...they are very eager and will smash about anything offered...very good 6wt action right now but they will get bigger very soon near this full moon. Then its best to go to a 9wt or 10wt because you never know just how big they might be...lots of cuda to have fun with during slack time and an easy dozen can be casted up in no time...

On the canals here in Miami and Homestead things are picking up...much depends on where you fish and what you are after...peacocks would be raging about now with the high water and heavy flow...this is over due for them and I expect rapid growth and fat bellies in short order...I have been getting some 2-3lbr's while targeting tarpon in the early dawn..this would indicate healthy water because they don't feed at this time yet I get them all the time just as the sun is about to come up...grass carp are really easy targets right now if you savor large fish on fairly small fly rods...seeing feeders up to 40lbs and they are competing against one another at times so the bite can be very easy under the mulberry tree...I have been seeing some large catfish/snakehead
up around the Homestead area near the Redlands as well as large jack crevalle...

Switching gears a little let me announce the latest deals I offer for flats fishing and canal fishing here in Miami and Homestead as well as the Everglades....
$250 a day...10-12hrs
$650 3 days..30-36hrs
$1000 5/6 days...60-65hrs {bonefish bootcamp}

I also offer housing and here is how it works...I can/will pick you up at the airport and you can rent cottage out back...this will keep you fishing non stop and no rental car needed or hotel...also I have a 3 bedroom house for 10 day blocks for a bonefish bootcamp deal which allows families to stay and do things while we sneak away to fish...great right? You can find me at www.BONEFISHWHISPERER.COM

Upon my next bonefish bootcamp booking I will start using FREEDOM HAWK KAYAKS for my clients unless somehow they arrive with their own kayak...also I will have the canoe for tandem as usual.
