Guide Report - Rich Jones August 2009 E-mail

Report: June turned out to be a very unpredictable month. We never got into the normal summer weather patterns with our afternoon rain storms. It made it tough to fish areas that required paddling over any open water in fear of getting caught up in a storm. For most of the month storms were predicted to come through at any time during the day.

I spent a good part of the month kayak fishing areas I don’t fish that often and it actually turned out to be very productive catching some real nice fish. It was a very good month for snook and tarpon. The Snook are here in large numbers and a lot of them were caught during the month. It’s hard to explain having a larger snook take your top water plug other than it’s an awesome experience and you’ll never know what it’s like till you go out and do it yourself.

Tarpon are here in large numbers also although some days they can be difficult to locate. Often when they are located they can be very stubborn and it can be tough to coax them to eat your bait. I usually am not rigged for the bigger (60lb+) fish but will defiantly target smaller fish which are a blast on fly. I caught a few during the month from juveniles up to over 30 pounds and I can assure you they are a lot of fun to catch and can be quite challenging in a kayak or canoe.

Although I caught a couple of reds and there are other reports of some nice fish being caught it was not the greatest month for them here. A lot of places I fished this month they simply did not exist and when I went to areas targeting them the conditions were just not right. In July and August red fishing should really be picking up.

For anyone interested I recently started a blog to report about my trips in the Everglades. I will try and keep it updated with my travels, including camping and fishing, great and not so great catching days here in Everglades National Park and surrounding areas. You can check it out at: http://kayakfishingtheeverglades.blogspot.com

Summer is here, it’s hot out and at times the bugs are real bad but if you want to catch some nice size snook now is the time to book a trip and experience what fishing this area is all about.
