| Choosing a Fishing Kayak This is the place to ask about kayak models. The forum is moderated by Jon, who's fished from over 4 dozen kayaks models for over 60 species all over the continent. Whatever you're doing, Jon's probably been in a kayak doing it too. |

I currently have two 12' kayaks that I've rigged and use for fishing. My Perception Sundance - a decent sit-inside was my first kayak that I've own and the first that I fished from. It's still in great shape although showing some wear on the bottom from all of the shallow streams that I've scooted through. My second fishing kayak is a Mad River Synergy 120. I was looking for a sit on top and got a great deal on this blem. I like it, and it's a pretty dry ride, but there are no scuppers, so when water gets in, it stays in unless i bail. In addition to my kayaks, I have three more smaller recreation kayaks for my wife and two kids to paddle around in. I've rigged one of these a bit - a 9' Mainstream Streak - for my son to fish out of.
As the natural progression goes with things like this, I'm in the market for a new kayak. I've pretty much decided to go with the Ocean Kayak Prowler Trident Angler 15 (long name don't you think?), but am holding off until I get to check out the Malibu Kayak Stealth 14 and X-Factor. There's not a MK dealer nearby, so I'm not sure I will get the chance to see one or both of these models before I pull the trigger on a new kayak. So, my dilemma is not so much what kayak to buy, but rather which one of my existing kayaks to get rid of. Six kayaks would just be too many! ![]() I like both of my current fishing yaks and like having a spare one for when I'm on the crusade to convert someone over to kayak fishing. I'm leaning toward getting rid of the Perception, but I know that I would get more $$$ for the Mad River that I could use to get my new rig and it would be nice to have at least one sit-inside that I could fish from. My son is hooked on kayak fishing as well and he's trying to work a deal to trade his 9' for one of my fishing yaks and let me sell his...

Just like fishing rods a serious kayak fisherman is going to have more than one kayak.
I've got a Hobie Rev, Adventure, Outback and Sport, Native Ultimate 14.5, Cobra Navigator, Tarpon 100 and soon I'll be adding an EK and Freedom Hawk. I also want to get another AI. I'm waiting for the tandem as I like the idea of taking a second person along or for camping having another 200#s of capacity.

I agree, like fishing rods, reels, and lures you can never have to many.
I have an old school ScupperPro, a Kazkazi Dorado, and an Indian River canoe.

I'm constantly changing my fleet. Right now it consists of 2 OKs. A Torque and a Trident 13 Bassyaks. I've also got a couple very old Hobies, a sport and adventure. A Cobra Navigator and a Tarpon 100. Soon I'll be adding a Freedom Hawk 12.

I think Craogslist is the best thing to happen to kayaking so far. I sold my Kea in less than 15 minutes and now am looking for a bigger replacement there. I almost never see a kayak listed twice on CL. Now there is no reason to own only 1 kayak.

Long story but I have decided that kayaking would be a great sport for my wife my wife and me. Here in Colorado there are a lot of lakes we can explore and fish at the same time. She is 5'1" and I don't want her to get discouraged. She wants stability but also an ability to explore. Any suggestions as to a model to start out on? What length would be good.
BTW> I have done a lot of reading and I am getting more tuned in on what to look for. Your advice is appreciated. Bruce p.s. Craigslist is great. |

My wife is 5'4" and uses a Prowler 13. She is 63 years old and it is plenty stable and easy to paddle. I just bought a Frenzy and it is a bit on the small side for her. I use an OK Big Game as my main ride but it would be too big for her. It's like paddling a barn door but you can stand and throw a cast net or fly fish from it with no trouble. It's also big enough to take a dog out duck hunting in.

What do you think you might want for the sundance. We have two that we use and might want a third....
