Everyone,

I'm new to kayaking and looking at the Emotion Renegade XT. I'm 6'1" 270lbs 32" inseam. I'm mostly going to be using it on smaller lakes for Bass/Crappie/trout Fishing.

Thoughts?

This is not the right kayak for you at your size in my opinion. The weight cap is only 325 and most times are over stated so with a little gear you are close. I really think you should look at a 12' kayak, it will give you a better fishing experience.

That's interesting everything I had read to this point said that the weight limits were understated I talked to two guys fishing on 250 lb rated kayaks that weighed more like 300.

12' is not really an option, I wouldn't have any where to store it. I just moved to a new area and will be in an apartment for at least a year. It has a storage unit that is jsut short of 10 ft long. I'll be able to angle in the 10 footer but no way to get a 12 in and I'm just not willing to pay for another storage unit just for the kayak.

Would you have any other suggestions if not the renegade?

Your friend is not wrong but I think the kayak not perform for you. If you are not going to paddle very far then you might be able to make it work for your situation. Is there anyway you can demo it first?

What exactly do you mean by perform? I'll sit too low making it a wet ride or it will not track/handle well?

I have "reserved" one at my local livery and the plan is to purchase it as soon as it comes in but I imagine I'll be allowed to demo it first.

I've looked at a whole slew of yaks from 9 - 12' and even at 12' which I don't have room for I'm not seeing any rated at anymore than $325. I don't have a budget for a $1000+ yak, not as a first kayak anyways. And I have been looking for months and have not seen a used one in my area.

I must say I dont know that kayak but I do know that the Malibu Mini X can handle some bigger guys and is only 9 foot and some change.

When I say perfom I mean that you might feel that the kayak is sitting too low in water and it will not paddle right. Again, I dont know this for sure but tell the shop that you want to take it for a spin.
