Trip Report - La Paz, Baja E-mail

To say that the trip got off to a bad start, is an understatement. On Friday the day before we left we found out that the owner of the boat fell on one of his charter boats and was killed. The owner hired a different Captain for our boat and after several calls we were told all would be fine. Then just before my plane was ready to taxi to take off, the captain said there was a problem with the cargo door and there would be a slight delay. The slight delay was a three and half hour change planes and cargo switch. Then I got a message from Joey C that his father had to be taken to the hospital the night before and that he would not be able to make the trip. Now I land in Mexico and found the bus which would take me on the 3 hour ride to the boat. After finding the marina and the other guys waiting for me, all was fine and the trip was finally off. After a nice late dinner, we headed for the boat to sleep. We then had to find the kayaks that the owner had secured for us, but after a while we found everything.

WOW, now to the fishing report! First here is a picture of the boat that was home for 6 days on the water.

It was very comfortable and the shower and kitchen worked very well. On the way to each different fishing grounds we trolled and had many, many hook ups with skip jack tuna, mahi-mahi and a bubch of different kinds of fish. The mornings got off to a late start with strong winds, so we fished from the boat until launching.

Here is a nice golden grouper that was caught by Bushy from the boat, with Allen also in the shot.

Once we got the kayaks in the water we all fished different styles and all were hooking up. Here is BoogieD from Hawaii with a nice cabrilla that was caught on a top water plug.

Each night just before dark we anchored the boat in a tucked away cove for shelter for the night. While we were getting dinner ready, Alllen through out a live bait and the line started screaming. After a 20 min. fight with light tackel he landed a great yellow tail.

When we were fishing on the bottom, we never knew what would hit the bait. Here is a nice trigger fish with great color that I landed.

Here is a needle fish that was over 5 feet long that I landed one morning on a top water plug.

Here is BoogieD from Hawaii with a great Mahi-mahi and one of my favorite pictures from the trip.

Here is Bushy from the Santa Cruz area of California with a nice kayak mahi-mahi.

Here is Allen with the only rooster fish caught on the trip. We were not really in an area for rooster fish, so this was a pleasant surprise.

Here is a picture of Allen, Bushy and Boogie with 2 nice yellow tail that were jigged from the boat.

A couple nice yellowtail

Here is me with a relly nice yellow tail that took me for a ride and a half. I was really glad to land this fish after having two really big fish on for a while and both getting off after my 50 lb. power pro either hit a rock, or something.

Danny with a very nice yellowtail

Here is a barred pargo that put up a great fight and also was great eating.

Check out the teeth on this guy!!

Here is Bushy with a great rod bend picture fighting and landing a nice yellow tail.

Getting hammered

Getting the kayaks on the boat was very easy and when we made long runs, it only took a few minutes to get them on board.

Here is a picture of the Captain, Raul with the four of us after landing. He did a great job and knew all the spots for the different species that were caught.

I took many many pictures of the scenery and wildlife that I will post more of when I get a chance, but here is an island with a cave that we padddled through with seals and sea lions all over the place.

Great scenery

I don't know how many fish we caught, but it was alot. There were times that we would fight over who was going to reel the fish in when we were trolling. I always tried for the rod that had the least line out!

It was a remarkable trip that didn't start off well, but ended up being an experience that I will never forget.
