The kayak fishing tournament scene seems to be in full swing and even though I have organized quite a few events I have never actually been a participant in one. This year that will change I am plan to attend a couple and actually fish. It is a shame that the Jacksonville event is the same weekend as the one I organize (Jamaica Bay) or I would certainly check that out because that is a kayak fishing tournament that all others should be measured against.
I know that there are some people out there that hope that someday these events will be like the big bass tournaments that we all see on ESPN, big sponsor decals and that jazz. I really hope that doesn’t happen, I love the heart and soul of the these events now with a healthy balance of hard-core-must-win-this-event-guys and people who just want to get out and fish, have a great time and get a new t-shirt. I think we should make sure that we keep these events fun and don’t make them intimidating to new people entering the sport and who use the tournament as an opportunity to learn from the experts.
I can’t help but feel good that last year at the Jamaica Bay Tournament we had people entered from 17 different states and getting groups like this together to fish and enjoy this great sport is the true essence of kayak fishing tournaments. Lets not forget that most of these events are for great causes and we can’t lose sight of the groups and people that your entry fee will help. Since there are now kayak fishing tournaments in just about every state, I encourage everybody to experience at least one this year.
