As we enter 2008 we are sure to see lots of new kayaks and gear for the kayak fisherman. We are no longer the stepchildren of the industry as companies are spending time reading kayak fishing forums and getting input from the people who are out there taking the sport to many different levels. It was not long ago when it was monumental to see the first kayak manufacturer have installed rod holders come with their kayak. Some of the innovations that we have seen in the last couple years are just amazing, not only from kayak companies but in all types of accessories that we use in our pursuit of fish in our kayak. In speaking with one of the kayak companies head of marketing, I was not surprised to learn that their research finds that one out of every two kayaks bought from them, will be fished from.
So what can we expect for the new year and years to follow, I think we are going to see real advances in the materials that kayaks are made from, I think that this is so important to get more people into the sport as the aging population is limited by the weight of the kayak and being able to get a kayak on top of their vehicle. Imagine a 15' X 30" sit on top kayak that truly weighs 40 lbs; this is possible with some of the new composites out there. Another area I think the future will bring improved design are kayaks with integrated stabilizers for standing, there are a couple out there now that I hope to test in 08'. I also think we will see a commitment to build pedal systems, I guess Hobie has shown us that it can work and how productive hand free fishing can be and I am sure there are other pedal designs that could surface soon. Even though I enjoy the exercise of paddling or pedaling, I think there is huge market for a craft that is motorized or a hybrid of man-powered and motorized, this could extend the range that we can explore and safely fish.
I think we will all reap the benefits of the arms race that companies are engaging in, they are being forced to make better products, stand by these products and the warranties they come with. The new year promises to be a great year to be involved in kayak fishing, better gear, more available information, tournaments and locals kayak fishing organizations that are there to provide support for both the seasoned kayak angler and neophyte to the sport.
Happy New Year,
Joe Cambria
